Bernard Nau, a Chartered Engineer, graduated in Physics at Imperial College 1959. After a further year there in Mech. Eng., sponsored by BHRA (a contract R&D company), joined the company as Research Engineer. Awarded PhD by London University for work on tribology of rotary mechanical seals. Manager of Fluid Sealing at BHRA for many years, building its international reputation and managing major r&d programs, including international consortiums for process & oil industries, and seal manufacturers. Consultancy for seal manufacturers, end-users, and as expert witness in UK & USA; particular expertise in rotary, reciprocating & static seals.
Co-authored "Fluid sealing technology" (Dekker Inc., N.Y., 1998), contributor to reference works and 70+ technical papers. Awarded Tribology Silver Medal in 1985, Mond Prize of Instn. Mech. Engrs. in 1986, gave the BP/IMechE Tribology Lecture in 1990. On technical committees for British & international standards, IMechE, Int. Conf. on Fluid Sealing, ESDU and, in US, the Pressure Vessel Research Council, and Society of Tribologists & Lubrication Engineers. UK Technical Expert for design of bolted gasketed joints, representing BSI at CEN and ISO; Chairman of CEN/TC74/WG10 Bolted Joint Design Methods.
