Main boom winch gearbox failure
The main boom winch gearbox on a 600 tonne floating crane in the South China Sea disintegrated and caused the boom to fall.

We were on board within 48 hours and identified the cause as a bearing assembly error and advised how the problem could be avoided in future.

Piston ring sticking problems, engines rated at up to 2800 kW
Review of the development problems associated with pistons and rings with small land clearances resulting in bore polishing. Sticking was occurring with both the top and second rings.

Modifications were recommended to certain piston rings and also the elimination of use of others.
