Wind turbine gearbox failures
Repeating failures of wind turbine gearboxes was occurring. The investigation concluded that the cause was insufficient internal clearance of paired taper roller bearings to accommodate thermal expansion. A rolling program was recommended to refurbish a total of 74 gearboxes with a higher value of clearance.

Design, development and testing of appropriate technology windmills
Windmills for pumping water in rural and remote locations were designed, developed and tested. The design criteria were low cost, suitability for local manufacture in developing countries, high reliability, and low maintenance. The windmills are now being manufactured and used in several countries in Africa and Asia; licences for local manufacture are available.
