    4.0 Hydrocarbon

Hydrocarbon Releases: Improving the Safety of Dry Gas Seals The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) is supporting an industry wide survey into Dry Gas Seal (DGS) performance, with the objective of increasing reliability and reducing hydrocarbon releases. The survey is being undertaken by Neale Consulting Engineers Limited, specialists in troubleshooting in the field of industrial tribology.

The stimulus for this project has been the occurrence of an appreciable number of DGS reliability problems in a variety of applications both in the UK and abroad.

The objective of the survey is to bring together and analyse experience of DGS performance from a wide range of users, as well as manufacturers and maintenance organisations.

The origin of detailed information will not be identified and will be treated as "Commercial-in-Confidence". All participants will receive, in advance of general release, the results of the survey, analysis, conclusions and recommendations.

The HSE would like the survey to lead on to the production of an "Industry Standard", with the possible further support from HSE and the involvement of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), to achieve an appropriate industry wide solution to this potentially serious problem.

To register an interest in participating in the survey, please contact:
      Dr Bernard S Nau nau.bs@btinternet.com
The results of this survey will be published on this web site (and also on http://www.open.gov.uk/hse/hsehome.html by end June 2000.
